Welch Allyn Introduces Extremely Bright, 10W Compact Metal Halide Lamp

Latest Addition to SolarcLight Source Family Ideal for Bicycle, Underwater Diving and Professional Flashlights

Skaneateles Falls, New York, August 3, 2000 – Welch Allyn, Inc.’s Lighting Products Division introduces the latest addition to its Solarc light source family—a bright, durable, battery-powered metal halide lamp suited for integration into bicycle, underwater diving and professional flashlights.

This new Solarc device consists of a lamp and ballast housed in a compact, lightweight package. The unique device architecture presents lighting system integrators with a plug-and-play solution to their lighting needs. “With its very simple design, our new Solarc lamp is a no-hassle solution for light source integrators,” said Ian Edwards, marketing manager for Welch Allyn’s Lighting Products Division. “It’s small, battery operated, instant-on and extremely bright—in fact, it’s the smallest, brightest metal halide lamp on the market today.”

The Solarc lamp offers three times the efficiency of comparable halogen lamps. “The unprecedented lamp efficiency will translate into finished products that feature either three times the light output or three times the battery lifetime of comparable halogen lamps,” said Edwards. “And since the device is all-solid-state and there is no filament to wear out or break, it is an ideal light source for such demanding applications as mountain biking or underwater diving flashlights.”

The Welch Allyn Solarc lamp measures a mere 55 x 35 x 35 mm, and weighs just 63 grams. It features an output of 13,000 candlepower and projects a bluish-white light rather than the comparative yellow emitted by equivalent halogen sources. The 10W device requires ~12.8V input and features a 1000-hour lifetime.

To promote the integration of this latest Solarc lamp, Welch Allyn offers “developers kits” for $500.00. The kit consists of five metal halide lamps, a power supply, an instructions sheet and a CD-ROM containing lamp technical specifications. Minimum lamp orders are 100 units with a price as low as $40.00 lamp/ballast set for larger quantities.
